Inferring Delay Variations using Packet-pair probing techniques for Network measurement

چکیده
IP networks are destined to become the ubiquitous global communication infrastructure. With the introduction of Service Level Agreements(SLAs), the importance of being able to accurately know and manipulate traffic behaviour in a network has increased. Inferring the delay distributions is of great importance for various network applications. In this paper, we adopt an active measurement technique which can infer delay variations by injecting back-to-back packet doubles or packet-pairs as probes instead of single packets across the end-to-end network. By this we exploit the ‘dispersive’ nature of packet-pairs to measure this performance metric. The modelling technique provides a commanding solution to address the problem of QoS estimation. Thus, the use of probe-packet stream ensures that the measurements derived are not pseudoestimates of the original dimensions. Finally, we validate our scheme by performing network simulations.

Evaluation and characterization of available bandwidth probing techniques
The packet pair mechanism has been shown to be a reliable method to measure the bottleneck link capacity on a network path, but its use for measuring available bandwidth is more challenging. In this paper, we use modeling, measurements, and simulations to better characterize the interaction between probing packets and the competing network traffic. We first construct a simple model to understan...
متن کاملOn the Comparison of Packet-Pair and Packet-Train Measurements
Measurements of link bandwidth and available bandwidth are getting increasingly important in the Internet. One example is to verify service level agreements (customer: “Do I get the bandwidth I’m paying for?”). When developing accurate measurement methods based on active probing it is important to understand (at the packet level) how probe-packet flows and cross-traffic flows interact with each...
متن کاملModeling of Packet Interactions in Dispersion-Based Network Probing Schemes
Measurements of end-to-end available bandwidth is getting increasingly important in the Internet. Many measurement methods are based on analysis of the dispersion of probe packets that have traversed the network according to some probing scheme. In this paper we present a theoretical framework to model interactions, at the discrete packet level, between probe packets and cross-traffic packets f...
متن کاملAnalyzing Cross Traffic Effects on Packet Trains Using a Generic Multihop Model
To develop accurate measurement methods based on active probing, an understanding (at the packet level) of how probe flows and cross traffic flows interact with each other is required. Several existing measurement methods rely on packet-train probing. In this paper, we use a multihop model to describe how cross traffic packets affect a packet train. When one packet within a packet train is dela...
متن کاملUnicast-based inference of network link delay distributions with finite mixture models
Providers of high quality-of-service over telecommunication networks require accurate methods for remote measurement of link-level performance. Recent research in network tomography has demonstrated that it is possible to estimate internal link characteristics, e.g., link delays and packet losses, using unicast probing schemes in which probes are exchanged between several pairs of sites in the ...
